Why did we choose the Powerwall 2 at HRV Solar?
Musk and Tesla are synonymous with the future of clean energy, technological advances and design prowess. Tesla’s products are driven by Musk’s vision for a world run on clean energy, and offer a way for solar powered homes to harness solar energy outside of sunshine hours.
At 155mm deep and weighing just 125kg, the Tesla Powerwall 2 lithium-ion battery is thinner and more rectangular than the previous Tesla Powerwall, making it versatile for floor or wall mounting and it can be stored inside or outside your home.
Beyond the recognition of Tesla’s innovative, cool looking products, at HRV we chose the Powerwall 2 for its reliability and performance.
Firstly, Lithium-ion batteries are regarded as the most energetic rechargeable batteries available.
The Powerwall 2 is actually slightly heavier than its predecessor, but, according to Business Insider, has twice the energy and twice the storage as the first-generation Powerwall, at rates superior to most other models on the market (we go into more detail on this below).
The Powerwall 2 also runs very quietly and uses an efficient and cost-effective internal inverter system. This inverter system converts DC energy to AC energy (the type of energy used by most household appliances and electrics). In the first Powerwall model, the inverter had to be purchased separately at extra cost, so the update means this important function is included in the purchase price for consumers.
The Powerwall 2 is also lauded for being completely automated, meaning like the Tesla cars, systems don’t typically require technical operation by users, and are updated by firmware updates. These firmware updates add new features and enhance existing functionality - just like when you install the latest iOS system on your iPhone.
The Powerwall 2 technology also monitors and controls its energy requirements in real time. And you can even monitor the Powerwall 2 system remotely on the Tesla app - which has heaps of cool functions, including warning you about a cloudy day.
Why should you have a battery alongside your solar energy system?
Powerwall teams up with your solar system to store excess energy generated during sunlight hours, so power can be available when you need it - minimising reliance on grid power.
According to Tesla, the batteries can also be used by non-solar homes to store energy collected during off-peak times when grid power prices are generally lower, and used during on-peak times when those grid power prices tend to go up. This off-grid feature is not currently available in the New Zealand market, but full off-grid capabilities are coming in the future.
This can also be a good option for grid-connected homes to keep them connected during an outage.

How does the Tesla Powerwall compare to other solar batteries?
According to Tesla, an average home uses approximately 20 kWh of energy per day, with the range between 10kWh for a small home and 40kWh for a large home. The company says each Powerwall provides 13.5 kWh of usable energy for backup power - meaning enough power is saved to get you through an outage.
This is something which you can easily track and monitor using the Tesla mobile app.
However, when paired with solar energy production, the Tesla Powerwall 2 can continue to recharge and Tesla says this has the potential to run your home indefinitely.

Why do New Zealanders like the Tesla Powerwall?
Choosing the Tesla Powerwall 2 can offer Kiwis peace of mind, as in addition to your rights as a consumer under the Consumer Guarantees Act, each system comes with a ten year warranty from Tesla Energy. The limited warranty covers defects in parts and workmanship, provided the Tesla Powerwall is registered and used as intended. It also should not require any maintenance. A standard Solar system with a Tesla Powerwall 2 installation will be a 1-2 day process.
